Science admit their error
Science magazine, and article author Gretchen Vogel, have admitted that their article claiming that the "only 2" studies to have found DNA damage from RF radiation were under suspicion of fraud. She has now admitted that there is at least one further laboratory that have replicated the work, but also strangely stated that she deliberately ignored research that found evidence of DNA damage that was not actual breakage of DNA!
Scientific American – Fact or Fiction? Cellphones can cause Brain Cancer - Barrie Trower Responds
- Parent Category: Health
The relevance for Airwave (TETRA) - by Barrie Trower
In Melinda Wenner's article, she writes, concerning cellphone use:
"If cellphone use does, in fact, triple the odds of getting cancer, these statistics would suggest that over 60 years a man's risk of developing a brain tumour from cellphone use increases from 0.206% to 0.621%, and a woman's from 0.156% to 0.468%." (1)
This suggests an increase of 0.415% and 0.312% respectively, or 4.15 and 3.12 per 1,000 people - or an average of 3.635 for both sexes. If we have 300,000 Officers and associated groups using TETRA (Airwave), this suggests a potential for a possible 1,090 slow-growing cancers.
However, these figures are based on ‘ordinary daily use' - a figure long argued over - it can range from 20 minutes to 2 hours per day, depending on whom you ask. Police Officers can, in fact, use such a microwave transmitter for a 14-hour shift, and it can have surges of power as a message comes through or is activated. As all electromagnetic waves are, in fact, accumulative - does this seven-fold increase in ‘daily use' mean that the 1,090 cancers can become 7,630 cancers?
Also, the original figures took into account that the number tumours would be less as the dense bone of the skull offers some protection. Police Officers tend to carry their transmitters on their neck (shoulder), which offers no such protection.
Melinda Wenner quotes Professor Challis - former Chairman of the MTHR programme as saying:
"For people who've used cellphone for more than 10 years, and who use their phone on the same side as the tumour, it appears there's an association".
The Nobel Prize-winning Irish Doctors Association have recently published details of 60+ recent research papers, showing how microwave radiation can trigger cancer promoters/initiators - change EEG patterns and cause other health problems. (2)
I do not accept the statement often given: "for every paper showing harm there is one showing microwaves are safe". I am still waiting for just one independently financed, peer reviewed study showing no ill-effects from long-term low-level microwaves.

Dr.Andrew Goldsworthy's presentation to British Society for Ecological Medicine,Royal College of GPs

A simple hypothesis based on studies made over thirty years ago (and regarded as mere scientific curiosities at the time) can explain virtually all of the adverse effects of exposure to non-ionising radiation, with pulsed radiation being the most dangerous. Some of the symptoms are especially apparent in individuals suffering from electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS). Symptoms include skin rashes, sensations of heat, pins and needles, dizziness, nausea, visual disturbances, effects on brain function, DNA damage, loss of fertility, risk of miscarriage, sensitivity to allergens and a greater chance of getting cancer.
The original work showed that electromagnetic radiation that was far too weak to generate significant heat could nevertheless remove calcium ions from cell surfaces. A modern interpretation of these results by Dr Andrew Goldsworthy (an Honorary Lecturer at Imperial College London) explains how the loss of these ions can make cell membranes leak, which in turn gives rise to the symptoms.
Leakage of the contents of skin cells causes inflammation. Leakage of ions in the sensory cells scattered over our body surfaces triggers them to send spurious nerve impulses to the brain causing false sensations (paresthesias). Similar leakages in the sensory cells of the inner ear give false impulses leading to tinnitus, dizziness and symptoms of motion sickness. Leakages in the rods and cones of the eye can cause a partial loss of vision. Leakage in neurons can cause brain hyperactivity leading to sleep disturbances, loss of concentration, ADHD and autism. Leakage in the tight junction barriers that protect all of our body surfaces from the ingress of foreign materials increases the risk of developing allergies and multiple chemical sensitivities. Leakage through internal membranes of cells releases digestive enzymes from lysosomes that then damage DNA, causing a loss of fertility, genetic damage to offspring and an increased risk of developing cancer in later life. Unnecessary exposure to even weak electromagnetic fields should therefore be avoided.

Wifi and Electromagnetic fields by Andrew Goldsworthy. Oct. 2008

However, they are seemingly oblivious to the fact that living cells depend on electricity and electrically charged atoms and molecules (ions) to maintain their healthy functioning. They can therefore be damaged electrically by electromagnetic radiation that is far too weak to generate significant heat.
For example, our cells use the energy from food to pump ions out of mitochondria (the cells’ power stations). They are then let back in through an ATPase (an enzyme not unlike a molecular water wheel). Each turn of the wheel generates a molecule of ATP, which is the main energy currency of the cell. In effect, an electric current flowing into and out of these tiny structures provides virtually all of our bodily energy.
Some of this ATP is then used to pump ions out of the cell. When they return via special enzymes (called transporters) in the cell membrane, they can carry with them essential nutrients that the cell needs to absorb. So we use electricity to absorb our food too.
Another example is in our nerve and brain cells. They use ATP to pump sodium and potassium ions across their external membranes. Nerve impulses are generated when these ions are suddenly let back again to give sharp spikes of current.
Last but not least, the membranes themselves (which are only two molecules thick!) are held together electrically. They consist mostly of negatively charged molecules bound together by positively charged ions (mostly calcium), which act as a kind of cement.
Unfortunately, weak electromagnetic fields gently tease out some of these calcium ions, which weakens the membranes and makes them more inclined to leak. As a result, our bodies become less efficient at generating energy and our nerve and brain cells are more likely to generate false impulses.
False impulses generated in sensory cells can give symptoms of electrosensitivity, whereas those generated in the brain can affect mental function and may also lead to stress headaches. Even people who do not regard themselves as electrosensitive, frequently get headaches and other unpleasant symptoms when exposed for long periods to the radiation from Wifi, cordless phones and mobile phones.
Other reported effects from prolonged exposure to pulsed microwaves include an increase risk of cancer and a loss of fertility. This seems to be associated with observable damage to cellular DNA, probably as a result of the leakage of digestive enzymes from lysosomes (tiny particles in living cells that digest and recycle waste) whose membranes have been damaged by the radiation.
Pulses carried by microwaves are particularly dangerous. This is because their very short wavelength allows the transmission of pulses with extremely rapid rise and fall times, and it is the rate of change of the fields (rather than their total energy) that does most of the biological damage; it catapults vital calcium ions away from cell membranes, which in turn makes them leak. This leakage can explain the great majority of the observed adverse health effects of prolonged exposure to electromagnetic radiation (for more on this, together with references, please visit http://tinyurl.com/55286a ).
It is therefore unwise and arguably dangerous to be exposed for long periods to the radiation from Wifi transmitters, cordless phones and mobile phones (especially their base stations, which run 24/7). They should certainly not be deployed in public places until all the risks have been independently evaluated. Any claims that they are harmless because they do not generate significant heat are completely unwarranted.

Handheld Learning 2008 Diary
- Parent Category: Home
On the second and main day of the Hand Held Learning 'conference', four epresentatives from Mast Sanity arrived early to hand out
The first to arrive was Graham Brown-Martin and two colleagues. He greeted us cordially and invited us to come inside to see the show later on.
Unfortunately we didn't have time to take up his offer having to get to work afterwards.
Lured into a false sense of security we entered the courtyard of The Brewery to stand outside the actual entrance to the 'conference'
Fairly soon 3 'bouncer's appeared and asked us to stand outside the courtyard in the street.
We tried to resist but they got more aggressive and actually pushed one of us.
As it was unclear whether or not the courtyard was public or private property we decide to take the line of least resistance and moved outside onto the pavement.
However the 'bouncers' were still being aggressive and drew a line on the pavement with their feet over which we could not stand!
They also shouted at us when we walked across the entrance (on public property)!
In the end we got fed up and told them to call the police if they wanted but that we had every right to stand where we wished.
After half an hour or so they moved away when they saw we were actually quite peaceful and not intending to harass any of the delegates.
Out mission is simply to redress the imbalance in the information that the delegates received.
We gave out leaflets to about 600 delegates.
15th October 2008
The third day of the conference quite a few delegates had already received the information.
Some were very interested and asked us questions. We pointed out that it is perfectly possible to have laptop computers that can connect to the
In a free bag of 'goodies' given out at the 'conference', we noticed a leaflet from BECTA which states that
'ICT Mark schools are more likely to be rated outstanding by OFSTED Have you hit the ICT mark?'
If ever there were a more blatant form of an inducement for schools to put in ICT
We would very much like an informal meeting with Graham Brown-Martin so we can discuss the evidence that we have uncovered.
Press Release 6th October 2008 Science, Spin and Industry Proxies – “Making Sense of Radiation"
- Parent Category: Media
The Pro-GM science lobby group "Sense About Science" has just announced a new leaflet "Making Sense of Radiation" - it appears to be a knee-jerk reaction to the recent Press coverage of the ground-breaking conference held in London attended by both sides in the debate over Microwave Radiation and its health effects.
The leaflet makes sweeping claims that can not be substantiated such as "the Draper study published in 2005, found a relationship between the chances of developing leukaemia and the distance a person lived from power lines in the UK,...This does not show, however, that the pylons are causing cancer. ... The increased risk may be because the children shared some other risk factor for leukaemia perhaps due to exposure to some other environmental conditions or carcinogens. ", "but there is no evidence that RF radiation causes harmful non-thermal effects" or "Non-ionising radiation does not have enough energy to damage or kill the cell, and so cannot cause cancer"
[new - Read Powerwatch critique of the Sense About Science leaflet here ]
Trustee Yasmin Skelt said "We at Mast Sanity believe that it is a measure of Sheer desperation on the part of the Mobile Phone Industry lobby that they have resorted to such dis-information , and clearly demonstates that they are on the run The tide of Scientific studies is so overwhelming now, showing health effects at emission levels far below the limits currently applied in the UK."
"It is well documented that this is exactly
what the tobacco industry did over the safety of tobacco and the oil industry
did over global warming. The methods are the same. 'Doubt'
is their product."
"However the evidence speaks for itself. Many scientists and indeed countries are now acting to issue health warnings concerning dangerous exposure to radiation emitted from mobile/wireless devices. Earlier this year 5 countries have issued warnings to their citizens of varying strengths particularly warning to restrict mobile phone use in children." [10-15]
The European Parliament is concerned about the health effects from this technology and has gone on record as such in September 2008 "[The European Parliament ] Is greatly concerned at the Bio-Initiative international report(8) concerning electromagnetic fields, which summarises over 1500 studies on that topic and which points in its conclusions to the health risks posed by emissions from mobile-telephony devices".
Many eminent scientists in Europe and beyond, most of whom have done original, published, peer-reviewed research in this field of Electromagnetic radiation as part of the International Commission for Electromagnetic Safety (ICEMS) have signed the Venice Resolution stating: "We take exception to the claim of the wireless communication industry that there is no credible scientific evidence to conclude there is a risk. Recent epidemiological evidence is stronger than before, which is a further reason to justify precautions to be taken to lower exposure standards in accordance with the Precautionary Principle"
Instead of taking positive action the UK Government is further cosying up to the Mobile Phone Industry by Prime Minister Brown appointing the Vodafone chairman as his "business ambassador" .
Mast Sanity, on the other hand, is completely independent. We do not sell anything, we do not gain commissions, nor do we endorse any products or treatments. We do, however, in order to provide practical help to people, provide links to sources of information about shielding and interventions which some people may find useful.
Mast Sanity is the largest group in the country campaigning for the safe siting of masts and has links with related groups globally.

19th September 2008 - News update from RRT
- Parent Category: Media
On 8th & 9th
September, the Radiation Research Trust brought together leading experts in the
fields of science, politics and regulation from across the globe to debate the health
effects of electromagnetic fields. This was the first time that such a
conference was organised to include experts from both sides of the health
debate (those that believe electromagnetic fields have negative effects on
health and those that believe the opposite is true).
fields and health – a global issue’, the conference took place at
the Royal Society, and was attended by a number of highly prominent speakers.
These included speakers from world establishments such as ICNIRP, WHO, RNCNIRP
and national bodies such as the UK Health Protection Agency and the MTHR. They
were joined by scientists, politicians, lawyers and concerned citizens, each
offering differing viewpoints in order to encourage discussion around risk
assessment, precautionary measures, social policy and areas where further
research is required.
The conference produced a number of
informative presentations on a wide variety of issues related to
electromagnetic radiation. Topics covered included the effects of mobile phone
base stations, brain tumour studies, studies on electro-sensitivity and
electromagnetic fields effects on animals and humans.
The conference was organised by the
Radiation Research Trust with the aim of developing appropriate precautionary guidance
so that policy-makers can make the best decisions about regulation and give
clear and appropriate advice to the public, in particular parents, young people
and those with environmental sensitivities.
Eileen O’Connor, Trustee at the Radiation Research Trust, said:
conference was extremely successful in gathering some of the World’s
leading speakers and organisations with expertise in electromagnetic radiation,
sparking debate on public policy and the precautionary approach. Now we need to
collectively agree on the way forward, filling in the gaps in scientific
research and whilst doing this, looking at ways to keep the public informed of
potential risks with appropriate precautionary advice.”
The RRT is producing conference proceedings which will follow later on this year.

Presentation to the Beekeepers Association, Glastonbury 9th August 2008
Mr Ferguson purchased a Georgian house in Bath. The only problem appeared to be 30 nests of bees sharing the same property. Everything was tried to rid his house of bees, but all efforts failed. Then Mr Ferguson installed a WiFi system; the bees left and never returned. (1)
Similarly, when University Scientists placed a DECT phone near hives, both the weight of the honeycomb and the numbers of bees returning to the hive decreased. During one experiment, no bees at all returned. (2)
The common denominator here is that both WiFi and DECT transmit microwaves, common to mobile phones, TETRA, all similar devices and their transmitters. Microwaves are made up of both electric (like static) fields and magnetic (like magnets) fields.
Bees use the Earth's magnetic field to help them both position themselves and navigate. To do this, they have magnetic materials in their heads, thoraxes and abdomens. (3) These particular magnetic materials can be re-magnetised by a stronger magnetic field (it is one way of making magnets). Once magnetised this stronger field will remain. Subsequently, their particular directional finding mechanisms can inadvertently misdirect them.
Let's put this into some sort of perspective:
Honeybees have been shown to be sensitive to magnetic field differences of (1nT) one thousand millionth of one magnetic unit (the Tesla). (4) The Earth has both an horizontal and vertical magnetic field which the honeybee will both detect and use for positioning. Permitted magnetic field levels from transmitters are roughly 640 times greater than that of the bee's most sensitive level; this is without considering any pulsing and accumulative effects from other nearby transmitters - e.g. mobile phones and WiFi. The Earth's magnetic field is a static field, whereas the transmitters use an oscillating field; these fields have different properties. Imagine you are driving along a strange motorway and, instead of seeing one traffic sign, you see 640!
A problem humans living near transmitters often encounter is acoustic vibration (vibrating pipes, metallic conduits, even bed-springs), sometimes called resonance. Any constant rhythmic variation from a force (wind/electromagnetic/mechanical) can cause resonance in the atomic layout if the recipient/object is "tuned in" to that frequency.
Both the brain and the body of a honeybee can vibrate (resonate) from some of the frequencies used by the Communications Industry. Bees also "waggle-dance" to communicate within the hive; this "waggle-dance" sends vibrations used for communication throughout the honeycomb. (1)(5)
The frequency of vibrations for the honeybees' "waggle-dance" are set at around 200-300 Hz (vibrations per second). This also is the pulsing frequency used by some mobile phone transmitters. (6) Hence, it is a viable proposition to assume that some hives near transmitters must be continually forced to vibrate, day and night, sending possible inappropriate signals.
The Varroa mite is often mentioned, along with other infestations or diseases, as a cause of the demise of bees. However, colonies of Varroa-resistant bees are also suffering. (7) As both Dr Carlo (8) and Alex Roslin (9) say:
Firstly - the problem is sudden and global, suggesting it is a global source; the coincidence here is the tripling of global microwave background radiation. Secondly - normally with a disease or virus the bees die within or near their hives, but now, in most reported cases, the bees are simply disappearing.
As one bee-keeper said on Spotlight BBC News from the Royal Cornwall County Show (6.6.08) "It is like a giant hoover just comes out of the sky and sucks them up".
In other situations where bees have maintained their usual numbers, it is reported that their immune systems are collapsing (10) and/or their metabolic rate is suppressed. (2) This is not surprising. I believe the proof has been staring us in the face for years, but it has been overlooked.
When Universities embark upon lengthy research studies concerning microwave radiation and resulting cellular effects, they often use small mammals and/or invertebrates. The resulting data is written up and published. However, in all of the range of research I have studied, one critical conclusion has not been clearly identified: there is a direct, indisputable correlation between what is shown under experimental conditions and what is already happening within the natural environment. This is to say, if low-level microwave radiation has been found to suppress the immune system (using everyday levels) in the Laboratory, it will also suppress the immune system outside the Laboratory - in everyday living.
Exacerbating everything already mentioned is "HAARP". Using approximately 180 transmitters spread over 30 acres, with a power rating of 3.6 million watts or more, this Alaskan super-transmitter could probably disorientate the best part of a country's entire bee population if it were aimed in that direction, at an appropriate angle (to reflect from the ionosphere). (11) (12) "HAARP" may be the biggest transmitter in the World, but it is by no means the only super cluster of transmitters to be found. A look at any military site will show this.
Within my capacity as a scientific adviser, I receive many research papers from all over the World and I believe that what is happening to bees is also happening to other living things. I have a plethora of research on:
Butterflies, trees, plants, birds (including white stork, pigeons, sparrows and migratory birds), swamp life, frogs, bats, ants (who use the Earth's magnetic field for direction) cattle and whales ("HAARP" can be used to communicate to submarines).
The common denominators are: all have suffered from the installation of nearby microwave transmitters (as used by the Mobile Phone Companies), and they either use the Earth's magnetic field for navigation, or they are exposed to ground-currents (or both).
It seems that this scenario follows the worldwide proliferation of the Communications Industry. I can no longer find a trouble-free country where mobile phones, WiFi, TETRA, blue-tooth, etc., are being used.
Bees use similar thinking mechanisms as humans - that is, they can memorise and organise.(13) (14) If a strong magnet is placed near a hive under construction, a strange-looking comb will be produced. (5)
The bee is this planet's most sensitive proprioceptive animal (using Earth's magnetism and vibration to feel, position and orientate). Clearly, if a cluster of magnetic-wave-transmitting antennae are introduced into the bees' environment, it will try to find a more tolerable territory - possibly exhausting it's energy and dying in the process.
Not only are we interfering with the physical properties of this planet, upon which our evolution has been based, but we are putting at risk the very foundations of our food chains and webs.
As a physicist and teacher of science, if I were asked to devise a mechanism to eliminate bees from the planet, I would suggest the deployment of communications transmitters, using pulsed (modulated) microwaves, which penetrate every part of this planet. There is absolutely nowhere the bees can go to escape such microwaves.
I believe that microwaves from the new communications
systems are suppressing the immune responses of the bee, leaving them
susceptible to infection, causing their magnetic orienting capability to become

The petition reads:
"We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to ask you to investigate fully the plight of increasing numbers of people who have become electro-sensitive (ES) or electro-hypersensitive (EHS) in the UK due to electricity or the new pulsed microwave radiation technologies such as TETRA, mobile phones and masts, WiFi, radar, cordless phones and a host of “wireless” gadgets.
We also ask you to:
1. Demand independent research into this “FUNCTIONAL IMPAIRMENT CAUSED BY ENVIRONMENTAL TRIGGERS” - which does have a distinguishing feature from other illnesses/conditions with similar symptoms i.e. the ES/EHS CAN AND DO recover if they are isolated from the cause(s) of the sensitivity.
2. Demand monitoring by personnel trained or researching in this field who are aware of the effects of pulsed microwave radiation/electricity.
3 Ensure that the Human Rights of the ES/EHS are observed fully and recognise electro-sensitivity as a disability in the UK, as in Canada and Sweden.
4 Provide safe zones so that the ES/EHS have places to recover/live in OR replace pulsed microwave radiation with a safer technology. "
