Downing Street Letter 2008 06 05

A Mast Sanity delegation of Trustee Yasmin Skelt and Simon Densley delivered the following letter to Gordan Brown today

Rt Honourable Gordon Brown MP
Prime Minister
10 Downing Street
London
SW1A 2AA
5th June 2008

Dear Prime Minister,

Mobile and Phone Mast Safety

I was disappointed in the reply from the Rt Hon Dawn Primarolo MP, Minister of State Department of Health, to Mast Sanity letter of the 12th December to you which enclosed a copy of the BioInitiative Report and the book “Cellphone: Invisible Hazards in the Wireless Age” book by Dr George Carlo and Martin Schram. The BioInitiative Report has created a paradigm shift in the way that the issue is now viewed. The reliance by the Health Protection Agency on ICNIRP guidelines to protect public health is now outdated. The ICNIRP guidelines were written up in 1998 based on 6 studies and there are now many studies that suggest the limits should be reduced, as explained in the BioInitiative Report.

Since our letter of the 12th December, there has been a steady stream of reports regarding the health risks posed by mobile phone and wireless technology, some of which are included in the Appendix to this letter. There are also now more warnings from overseas Government’s and Government Agencies – for example, the French Health Ministry, the Russian National Committee on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection and The Food and Drug Administration in the USA.

Brain tumours now kill more British children than leukaemia and now brain cancer is killing more British adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer. Recent research and debate is now focussing on cell phone’s being a contributory factor in two types of brain tumour. In recent weeks there has been excellent television coverage of this debate with world class scientists and doctors discussing the latest research – the links are included in the appendix.

Again, we ask you to instruct the Chief Medical Officer and the Health Protection Agency to issue warnings to the British public and ensure that public exposure limits are reduced immediately. Those responsible in Government will be held to account for their continuing lack of action on this issue, continuing to fail to protect its citizens from the health hazards of electro magnetic fields.

Mast Sanity is the largest group in the country campaigning for the safe siting of masts and has links with related groups globally. We request and would welcome a meeting with yourself or your Ministers to discuss maximising safety from mobile telephony for the general population.

Yours sincerely,

Mast Sanity

Early Day Motion in House of Commons - BRAIN CANCER

21.04.2008

Bercow, John

EDM 1345

That this House welcomes the new focus on child health announced by Department of Health Ministers on 17th March in Brain Tumour Awareness Month, but draws attention to the significantly increased numbers of childhood cancers registered annually since 1962 (up 35 per cent.); notes that some 300 children a year are found to be suffering from brain cancer, and that it is believed that brain cancers now account for more deaths among children and the under 40 year olds than any other cancer; further notes that the five year survival rate of all cancers now stands at 50 per cent. but that the comparative survival rates for males and females with brain cancer are 12 per cent. and 15 per cent. respectively; and urges the Government to encourage more laboratory research into brain cancer and to study the reasons why certain other EU countries achieve significantly better survival rates for children and adults suffering from brain cancer so that the NHS can adopt best treatment practice.

Prenatal and Postnatal Exposure to Cell Phone Use and Behavioral Problems in Children.

Divan HA, Kheifets L, Obel C, Olsen J.

From the aDepartment of Epidemiology, UCLA School of Public Health, University of California, Los Angeles, CA; and bInstitute of Public Health, Department of General Practice, University of Aarhus, Aarhus, Denmark.

CONCLUSIONS:: Exposure to cell phones prenatally-and, to a lesser degree, postnatally-was associated with behavioral difficulties such as emotional and hyperactivity problems around the age of school entry. These associations may be noncausal and may be due to unmeasured confounding. If real, they would be of public health concern given the widespread use of this technology.

Non-thermal biological effects of microwaves, current knowledge, further perspective and urgent needs.

Igor Belyaev, Stockholm University, Sweden, General Physics Institute Russian Academy of Science, Moscow, Russia.

Children may represent most sensitive group to non-thermal effects of mobile telephony. Before this issue will be investigated, precautions should be taken in erection of base stations in vicinity of schools.

Creation of zones that are free of mobile communication for hypersensitive to EMF should be considered.

Long-lasting adverse effect on important cells of our immune system can have strong relationship with health risk from mobile telephony.

In vitro studies indicate that the duration of exposure can be more important for non-thermal effects than intensity and therefore, effects of Microwaves from base stations on primary human cells should be studied.

France warns against excessive mobile phone use
Thu Jan 3, 2008 2:31am IST

By Brian Rohan

PARIS (Reuters) - The French Health Ministry on Wednesday issued a warning against excessive mobile phone use...

The head of France's AFSSET, an independent but state-funded health watchdog, said parents should not give small children mobile telephones.

"Since they aren't capable of limiting their use of the telephone, parents should not buy them mobile phones," Michele Froment-Vedrine told Reuters.

As of September 30, there were more than 53 million mobile users in France, about 84 percent of the population, according to the French telecoms regulator Arcep.

At Orange, France's largest mobile phone operator, no-one was available for comment.
