Press Releases

Mast Sanity press office is open during the working week to deal with all press and media enquiries. Please email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

The Mast Sanity Press Office can be contacted by e-mail only, currently.

Our press officers are volunteers but try to respond immediately and certainly within an hour. If a response hasn't been received within an hour and the matter is urgent please call our advice line. PLEASE only do this if the enquiry is urgent. It would help us if you state your deadline for requiring the information. We also provide spokespeople and are regularly asked for a representative to appear on news programmes. Mast Sanity has also worked with producers and researchers on a number of TV and radio programmes and documentaries. We issue regular press releases and these can be accessed via the link below.

Our press officers have access to our data base of campaigns and can provide contact details of campaigns willing to speak to the press and many other contacts and sources. Health, technical, planning and environmental information can also be provided. For background information on the issues our health section provides links to many research studies. Papers by scientists Gerard Hyland , Barrie Trower and Neil Cherry provide good background information.

In addition check out our newsfeeds for an indication of the number of regional stories there are. This IS the single biggest issue concerning more people in more areas than anything else. Something has to give soon. Most politicians whether local, national or European will admit that they get more correspondence about mobile phone and TETRA masts than any other issue

Cancer Clusters, clusters of ill health, depression and even suicide were predicted[1] several years ago in proximity to Mobile Phone Masts and other Wireless sources of Microwave Radiation. Yet the UK Government has long ignored such warnings.

The extremely sad situation in Kingswinford where another Cancer Cluster has been discovered in proximity to a monster Mobile Phone Mast platform is one of the latest examples [2]. This is consistent with the study from 3-4 years ago in Naila in Germany[3].

The incredibly worrying and increasing suicide cluster in Bridgend[4] , with the latest suicide just last week, 16th June 2008[8], a town with a large concentration of Mobile Phone Masts and town-wide Wi-Fi[5] (Wi-Fi since 2006 or so) – should be the subject of an open and transparent Public Inquiry looking at all the factors.

The Mobile Phone Industry must be aware of the dangers and health risks themselves – one example being  how, in 2000, The ECOLOG Report[6,12] (containing damning evidence of harm  from Mobile Phones) – but paid for by T-Mobile in Germany - was not widely published at the time - it re-surfaced quietly into the public domain several years later. In the US Dr. George Carlo, a leading epidemiologist who formerly headed the $28 million Wireless Technology Research (WTR) program funded by the Mobile Phone Industry, warned the Mobile Phone Industry about the dangers in the 1990’s yet his findings were not published[9].

It is already untenable for the UK Government and the Health Protection Agency [HPA] to ignore the growing amount of evidence of the harm that Mobile Phone Masts are causing. It was for this reason that a Mast Sanity delegation led by Trustee Yasmin Skelt delivered a copy of the BioInitaitive Report[7] to Downing Street in December 2007 and why she led another delegation to Downing Street 2 weeks ago  demanding immediate action from Gordon Brown.

Trustee Yasmin Skelt said “We are calling on the Health Protection Agency to carry out proper epidemiological studies of suicide[11] and cancer clusters using protocols developed by Dr. Gerd Oberfeld[10]  (MD).  Researchers need to know where the masts are, how long they have been there and the technical details.  The link between electromagnetic fields and depression has been known since the 1930s”

Mast Sanity is the largest group in the country campaigning for the safe siting of masts and has links with related groups globally. We request and would welcome a meeting with the Prime Minister or his Ministers to discuss maximising safety from mobile telephony for the general population.

Again, Mast Sanity ask the Prime Minister to instruct the Chief Medical Officer and the Health Protection Agency [HPA] to issue warnings to the British public and ensure that Public exposure limits are greatly reduced immediately. Those responsible in Government, the HPA, ICNIRP as well as the Industry will be held to account for their continuing lack of action on this issue, continuing to fail to protect citizens from the health hazards of Electro-Magnetic Fields [EMFs].

The Government has just announced a "new study to investigate whether the use of mobile phones is linked to long-term health effects such as brain cancer and neurodegenerative diseases" as part of the Mobile Telecommunications and Health Research Programme (MTHR) - coincidently the day after a Mast Sanity delegation again went to Downing Street.

The Government, Mobile Operators and the HPA seem determined to delay taking any action for as long as they can. We don't need another long term study from the MTHR[11]. The time for action is now!

The long term studies that have already been carried out are consistent. Heavy users of Mobile Phones are much more likely to get Brain Tumours of one sort or another, as the latest study by Hardell et al confirms this. [1].

It appears to be that the Government is more concerned with keeping the taxes from Mobile Phones rolling in, than protecting the public from harm. If this sounds familiar, it is exactly what Harold MacMillan as Chancellor did back in 1957 over the tax revenue from cigarettes[2] - unbelievable but true, as many suspected for years. Is it the same situation now for Mobile Phones and their Masts?

The Mobile Phone Industry must be aware of the dangers and health risks themselves - one example being how, in 2000, The ECOLOG Report[3] (containing damning evidence of harm from Mobile Phones) - but paid for by T-Mobile in Germany - was not widely published at the time - it re-surfaced quietly into the public domain several years later.

It is already untenable for the UK Government and the Health Protection Agency [HPA] to ignore the growing amount of evidence of the harm that Mobile Phones are causing. It was for this reason that a Mast Sanity delegation led by Trustee Yasmin Skelt delivered a copy of the BioInitaitive Report[4] to Downing Street in December 2007[5] and why she led another delegation to Downing Street on Thursday with a Letter[6] demanding immediate action from Gordon Brown.

Trustee Yasmin Skelt said "Brain tumours now kill more British children than leukaemia and now brain cancer is killing more British adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer."

"Across the World Governments, Media and Decision Makers are standing up and taking note after massive media coverage, such as Larry King Live with 3 Neurosurgeons[7], and ever increasing evidence of how Mobile Phones are contributing to at least two types of brain tumour, with world class scientists and doctors discussing the latest research. How many people, famous[8[9[10] or otherwise will it take before the UK Government wakes up to what is happening and takes action?"

Latest study from Japan press release states "Japanese study clears mobiles of brain cancer risk" .

This is rather a far-fetched statement and one can only be suspicious of the motives. One study can never alone be "proof".

In September 2007 a pooled analysis of the 11 existing studies into brain tumours and phone use over 10 years was made.[i]

The scientists found that for tumours on the side of the head where the phone is held people were twice as likely to get a glioma, and two and a half times more likely to get an acoustic neuroma Hardell and Mild (on the MTHR) from Sweden who carried out the

analysis have also conducted their own independent studies into long term use, which show for over 2000 hours use the risk increases five times on the same side of the head where the phone is held.

In September Professor Mild told The Independent on Sunday: "I find it quite strange to see so many official presentations saying that there is no risk. There are strong indications that something happens after 10 years." He also said that mobiles should not be given to children, whose thinner skulls and developing nervous systems make them particularly vulnerable.

Interestingly, this advice was given to French parents by the French Health Ministry in December 2007 [ii] after the release of an Israeli Interphone study on salivary gland tumours showed a 50% increased risk on the same side as the phone was held. [iii]

"The time is past when it could be said that this technology does not causedamage; apparently it damages health," said Dr Sadetzki [iv] According to Sadetzki, director of the Gertner Institute for Epidemiology and Health Policy Research at Sheba Medical Center, Tel Hashomer, current regulations do not relate to cancer as caused by radiation but to the health risks posed by the instrument heating up.Dr Sadetzki also called for children¹s use to be limited.

There was no press release about this Industry funded research presumably because it showed negative effects. However the large study was conducted in 16 countries and studied 466 patients and 1266 controls.

In January more research funded by the MMF found that radiation from mobile phones delays and reduces sleep, and causes headaches and confusion. [v]

Again there was no release on the news wires since this research had found adverse effects despite that it was performed at 2 blue-chip universities in the USA and Sweden.. Likewise it was only reported by the mainstream media in the UK.

It is hard to comment on this new Japanese study since there is as yet no access to the paper however The Guardian seem to have been able to get an advanced copy. This study needs to be put into context when it is made available.

Update: The Guardian have said that this study was sponsored by Cancer Research but in fact the study said it was entirely funded by the Japanese Government and Mobile Phone industry. The Guardian got it wrong ."The study, funded by Cancer Research UK, was published yesterday in the British Journal of Cancer.'

In fact The study conducted in Japan was fully funded by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications of Japan (the equivalent of OFCOM in the UK) with the grateful cooperation of the surgeons and the staffs of the participating institutions. Read Here "A non-significant increase in OR among glioma patients in the heavily exposed group may reflect recall bias."

A recent report on Australian TV gives the alarming statistic that brain tumours in children have risen 21% in the last 10 years and are now the number one cause of death in children. [vi]

The Stewart Report warned back in 2000 that children should only use mobiles for emergencies. This needs to be enforced by the government.

Downing Street Letter 2008 06 05

A Mast Sanity delegation of Trustee Yasmin Skelt and Simon Densley delivered the following letter to Gordan Brown today

Rt Honourable Gordon Brown MP
Prime Minister
10 Downing Street
London
SW1A 2AA
5th June 2008

Dear Prime Minister,

Mobile and Phone Mast Safety

I was disappointed in the reply from the Rt Hon Dawn Primarolo MP, Minister of State Department of Health, to Mast Sanity letter of the 12th December to you which enclosed a copy of the BioInitiative Report and the book “Cellphone: Invisible Hazards in the Wireless Age” book by Dr George Carlo and Martin Schram. The BioInitiative Report has created a paradigm shift in the way that the issue is now viewed. The reliance by the Health Protection Agency on ICNIRP guidelines to protect public health is now outdated. The ICNIRP guidelines were written up in 1998 based on 6 studies and there are now many studies that suggest the limits should be reduced, as explained in the BioInitiative Report.

Since our letter of the 12th December, there has been a steady stream of reports regarding the health risks posed by mobile phone and wireless technology, some of which are included in the Appendix to this letter. There are also now more warnings from overseas Government’s and Government Agencies – for example, the French Health Ministry, the Russian National Committee on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection and The Food and Drug Administration in the USA.

Brain tumours now kill more British children than leukaemia and now brain cancer is killing more British adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer. Recent research and debate is now focussing on cell phone’s being a contributory factor in two types of brain tumour. In recent weeks there has been excellent television coverage of this debate with world class scientists and doctors discussing the latest research – the links are included in the appendix.

Again, we ask you to instruct the Chief Medical Officer and the Health Protection Agency to issue warnings to the British public and ensure that public exposure limits are reduced immediately. Those responsible in Government will be held to account for their continuing lack of action on this issue, continuing to fail to protect its citizens from the health hazards of electro magnetic fields.

Mast Sanity is the largest group in the country campaigning for the safe siting of masts and has links with related groups globally. We request and would welcome a meeting with yourself or your Ministers to discuss maximising safety from mobile telephony for the general population.

Yours sincerely,

Mast Sanity

COMMUNITY UPROAR OVER MAST PROPOSAL

Seething with anger, 150 residents living in and near Berry Lane, Rickmansworth, parents of children at Arnett Hills primary school - and a number of the children themselves - braved persistent rain last Saturday morning to stand together on the proposed site of a mobile phone mast in a show of defiance.

Over the last three years Three Rivers District Council, strongly supported by a large number of local objectors, has thrown out each of T-Mobile's applications for a mast on a pleasant area of grass, mature trees and shrubs in Berry Lane, between Chiltern Drive and Oakfield.
To the horror of all who had objected, and to many who had not had the opportunity to do so, T-Mobile appealed in September 2007 against the Council's rejection of its latest application - for a mast on the grass adjacent to 71 and 73 Berry Lane and no more than 10 metres from the garden boundaries of the nearest houses. Then, to the surprise of virtually everybody, an Inspector decided to allow the appeal.
Objectors have only 6 weeks (from 18 December) within which to mount a legal challenge but this period has shrunk to 3 weeks because of the Christmas postal delays and Christmas and New Year holiday periods.

Local residents are adamant that an 8.5 metre high mast, on the brow of a hill, would be extremely obtrusive and totally incongruous in such a residential neighbourhood. They furthermore insist that the mast - together with an ugly equipment cabinet next to it -would add to street clutter and act as a target for vandals; that an oak tree and nearby bushes would almost inevitably be damaged or destroyed during the installation, bearing in mind the depth and width of the excavation work required for a mast of this height; and that it is entirely inappropriate to site the mast so close to the school which is no more than 150 metres away (or 120 metres from the school playground).

One of the major fears felt by objectors, particularly by those living near to the mast and parents of children at the school, relates to concerns about the possible dangers to health arising from the emission of radio frequency from such masts. These genuinely held fears have been heightened by many media reports with headlines such as
"Phone mast pulled down after school cancer scare" (The Times 23/4/07) "Phone masts cause school cancer scare" (The Times 11/10/07) "Mobile phone cancer report 'buried'" (The Sunday Times 15/4/07) "Revealed: cancer clusters at phone masts (The Sunday Times 22/4/07) "Mobile mast will move from cancer cluster flats" (Daily Mail 7/8/07) and by published research suggesting that *ICNIRP guidelines are much too lax.

Given that the Government's own guidelines ** provide that
"Health considerations and public concern can in principle be material considerations in determining applications.... It is for the decision-maker.... to determine what weight to attach to such considerations in any particular case".
the Inspector's assessment of them as not carrying such weight as to justify refusal of the T-Mobile application was most disappointing, not the least in the face of the many submissions made to him on this point by residents and parents.
Residents and parents met local Councillors on 8 January when it was stated that the Council itself could see no justification for applying for judicial review. Faced with this further disappointment some residents/parents are seeking specialist legal advice at their own expense and hope to raise funds to seek judicial review themselves if this is consistent with the advice received from solicitors in the next day or two.

But whatever the eventual outcome, there is indignation in the Berry Lane neighbourhood at the anxiety and stress these successive mast applications have caused to residents and parents alike, and at the fact that Councillors appear to have no power to stop developments in Three Rivers that both they and their ratepayers reject.
