This is an emailed response to Cliff Mason of OFCOM following a proposal by Vodafone that it should be allowed to increase the power of its base stations by a factor of four. The email explains the mechanism by which base station radiation may be responsible for the increased incidence of cancer around them, the decline of the bees, and the loss of many trees within range to pathogens. It also explains how a simple modification to the signal could put it right.
It remains to be seen whether they are prepared to do anything about it.
Dear Cliff Mason,
As an ex-amateur radio enthusiast, I am a great believer in the value of mobile communications, but things are not yet right. There is compelling evidence for a mechanism by which the continuous radiation from mobile phone base stations can weaken the immune systems, not only in humans, but also in animals and plants. In addition, the same mechanism is probably responsible for colony collapse disorder in honey bees and their increased susceptibility to various pathogens.
It is based on a family of pigments called cryptochromes, which occur in virtually all animals and plants and some micro-organisms. They have a number of functions, including navigation in the Earth’s magnetic field and the regulation of the “body clock”, which is needed for solar navigation and also for the regulation of the immune system. This pigment is very badly affected by a wide range of radio frequencies, so that all of these processes can be disrupted by the modulated radiation from mobile phone base stations. This can explain the clusters of cancer cases believed by many people to have formed around mobile phone base stations as well as the decline and incipient loss of the honey bee population, which will have far more serious consequences for mankind. Insofar as the mobile phone operators say that there is no known mechanism by which their radiation can have these effects, we can only assume that they are unaware of its effects on cryptochrome.
I am attaching a document entitled “Making Mobile Phones Safer”, which sets this out in more detail and makes some simple suggestions to mitigate these effects. I am also attaching the original “Nature” paper by Ritz et al. in which they first discovered the effects of radio-frequency radiation on cryptochrome and animal navigation.
I am quite happy for you to forward this email, with attachments, to Vodafone, but I would suggest that they postpone any increase in power until this has been sorted out. It may not be that difficult.
Quadruple Dose of Radiation For All - OFCOM 3G Power Boost - Press Release 15th March 2010

With OFCOM’s Proposed 4 Times Signal Power Boost, the UK Population will be subjected to significantly more damaging microwave radiation – at a time when some other countries are reducing their exposure limits.
Vodafone and the other operators have been lobbying OFCOM for a signal boost for their existing 3G masts [2, 3] . This will be an approximate 4-fold increase[1]. In effect this represents 4 times as much microwave radiation over the entire area of the UK with current 3G coverage.
“Vodafone has told Ofcom that permitting a higher maximum licensed power would enable it (and other operators) to optimise their networks allowing the flexibility to serve more effectively a wider area and community with better in-building penetration”
There is no real need for it, this is purely commercially driven to take on BT and Virgin Media. Particularly considering the advised 'Precautionary Approach' and the accompanying adverse health effects from microwave radiation this increase is totally unwarranted and unwelcome.
Anybody who is feeling the effects of existing mobile phone masts at existing signal levels in their own homes and offices with multiple symptoms of, for example, migraines, insomnia, itchy rashes, nose bleeds through to depression and the onset of cancer will find their symptoms increasing. And for the 3-4% or so of the population who are Electro Sensitive (ES) or Electro Hypersensitive (EHS) their lives will become increasingly unbearable as the places they can go within the UK will effectively disappear over night.
Additionally, OFCOM may well be acting illegally in proposing an increase in 3G licensed power without putting the licenses back out to tender.
The OFCOM consultation ends this Friday 19th March 2010. We urge all concerned parties to object to OFCOM[5].
Mast Sanity will be objecting primarily on grounds of health. There are 1000’s of studies (and this number is ever increasing) pointing to harm from microwave exposure below the UK exposure guidelines. This proposed increase will only make matters much worse.
The European Environment Agency are taking the research evidence seriously and are calling for exposures to be reduced citing the Bioinitiative Report[6] (a review of over 2000 published studies)
OFCOM is not in a position to consider the health aspect of this increase in exposures. It looks solely at the technical aspects.
Why is the UK Health Protection Agency (HPA) not involved in this consultation and why does their advice differ from that of the EU Environment Agency?
Mast Sanity calls upon OFCOM to withdraw their proposals for a 3G Signal Power Increase.
Further Mast Sanity call upon OFCOM to immediately reduce all Mobile Phone signal levels to outdoor ‘ALARA’ levels (As low as reasonably acceptable) under the ‘Precautionary Principle’, to encourage fixed-line telephony within buildings, encourage investment in fibre optics and passive alternatives such as Visual Light Communications[8] and thus reduce the overall microwave load on the UK Population – NOT increase it.
Do Mobile Phones Cure Alzheimer’s Disease?

Comments by Andrew Goldsworthy on a
widely publicised paper by Arendash and co-workers that suggests that mobile
phone radiation may cure Alzheimer’s disease.
I have looked at
the original Arendash et al. paper and things are not quite as reported in the
press. The radiation was not modulated
The first point I should make is that they used radiation at 918MHz (similar to
a GSM mobile phone in this respect) but it was neither pulsed nor modulated, so
it cannot be regarded in any way as being equivalent to real mobile phone or
Wifi radiation. Unmodulated radiation is less
biologically active
The non-thermal effects of unmodulated radio frequency radiation are normally
much weaker than modulated radiation and could even produce the opposite effect
(this is called radiation hormesis, which has been studied mostly in relation
to ionizing radiation, but it probably also applies to non-ionizing radiation).
Radiation hormesis It is
argued that living cells and organisms perceive the damaging effects of the radiation
and put themselves into “repair mode”. This includes boosting enzymes needed
for cellular growth and regeneration and also triggering inflammation to
increase the blood supply to the affected region. Provided these measures are
successful, there may be no observable adverse effects. However, some of these
mechanisms are generic and may also affect other illnesses, so that very weak
radiation may have net beneficial effects, even on systems that are not directly
affected by it. This may be what we are seeing here; mild inflammation of the
brain would increase its blood supply and could stave off the degeneration
normally associated with Alzheimer’s disease. Amplitude modulated waves can weaken
cell membranes and cause illnesses When a
carrier wave is modulated in this way, it generates a range of other frequencies
on either side of the carrier (called sidebands), which contain the
information. Digital transmissions have particularly wide sidebands that
encompass many other biologically active frequencies, including those that
interfere with the activity of cryptochrome,
which some animals use to sense magnetic fields for navigation (Ritz et al.

The take-home story To sum up, it is perfectly possible that unmodulated microwaves could mitigate
the effects of Alzheimer’s disease, but modulated microwaves are likely to do
more harm than good. So now may not be the time to buy granny a mobile phone,
but we should nevertheless look more carefully at the effects of unmodulated radiation. It may really
help, but we still need to proceed with great caution. Andrew

Amplitude modulated radio waves (such as those used by mobile phones), where the
strength of the carrier wave rises and falls in time with the modulating
waveform, give greater biological effects. This is perhaps because they are
more effective in jerking structurally-important calcium ions free from cell
membranes, which makes them more inclined to leak. The effects of this can be

Smart Meters - Good in Theory - Bad in Practice

Oh dear - another cynical money-making ploy by the UK Government - not the great hope to save the world as it has been dressed up as in the PR. The only initial savings will be on the meter readers whose jobs will be lost. And our homes will be filled with even more pulsing microwaves just to do remote meter reading. The following sound-bites say it all:-
"At the centre of the new system is the creation of a multi-billion pound company that will collect information from meters in 26 million households."
"Telecoms giants O2 and Vodafone are negotiating key roles in the organisation, which will be responsible for receiving information on electricity and gas usage in every home and passing it on to energy companies."
"Initially, this "hub" is likely to be a joint venture, but energy analysts expect that once established, it could be sold off as a single company."

Dr. George Carlo on Children and Health Damage from Mobile Phones

As you know, my first warning on children using cell phones came in 1999 and was echoed loud and clear in my Invisible Hazards book in 2001. This is not new. We were concerned then about children being more susceptible to radiation damage than adults because of their active brain development, exposed DNA and deeper penetration of electro-magnetic radiation into their smaller heads. A decade later, we have data confirming those fears: the most recent Hardell study showing the highest risk of brain tumors in people who began using cell phones as teenagers; observations in young people and controlled experiments of cell phone related behavioral anomalies, learning difficulties, and stunted social development; and we know that the cell phone infrastructure is playing a role in the current Autism epidemic.
But, while those observations are being debated amongst scientists and policy makers, a more serious problem is growing under the radar. Most alarming is that we understand clearly the mechanism of harm for cell phone related damage, including epigenetically induced maladaptation. In effect, the mechanistic data portend that cell phone radiation exposure in this most vulnerable population of young people is adversely altering the genome of an entire future generation. With the pervasive penetration of cell phone use in teenagers globally, an unprecedented and insidious genetic experiment has reached global dimensions -- and no one can predict with any degree of certainty, where it might lead.
Controlling cell phone use in young people is not a choice. It is an urgent necessity.

Dr. Goldsworthy responds to HPA's "no risk" Wi-Fi Press Release

The following quote from the notes to editors is muddled and
deeply misleading.
"There is no consistent evidence to date that exposure to RF signals from Wi-Fi and WLANs adversely affect the health of the general population".
It is muddled because it confuses two completely separate issues.
1. Is there any evidence that Wi-Fi is harmful to health?
The answer to this is DEFINITELY YES.
2. Is the whole population affected?
The answer to this is SEEMINGLY NOT.
It is misleading because it is written in such a way as to imply that Wi-Fi is safe for EVERYONE and there is no reason why it should not be used universally in schools. What about the health of the students and staff who are affected? Do they not care?
The use of the word "consistent" in the quote is also worrying since it suggests that physicists and engineers, possibly from the mobile phone and Wi-Fi industries, rather than biologists and health experts, are in control.
No trained biologist or medical practitioner would ever expect the same level of consistency from experiments with complex living organisms as is possible with simple physical systems.
Apart from identical twins, each one of us is genetically and physiologically unique and we do not all respond in the same way to metabolic insults. Not everyone who smokes dies of cancer, and we do not all suffer the same side effects from taking a medicinal drug. Even the same person may not be equally susceptible all of the time. For example, if we are ill, our resistance to further infections is usually lowered. Anyone who says that we must all show the same response to electromagnetic radiation before its effects can be regarded as real must have a very limited knowledge of biology. They are certainly not qualified to sit in judgement on important health issues that are likely to affect billions of people worldwide, let alone the health of unsuspecting UK school children and staff who have no choice.
